NFC Times Exclusive Insight – TAIPEI, Taiwan: More than a dozen Taiwanese banks and their mobile payments joint venture along with Mastercard plan to announce Thursday the launch of mobile payments using host card emulation, with more banks to follow.
Mastercard-branded cards will apparently be the only cards available for the HCE-enabled wallets at launch, and this is believed to relate to Mastercard’s willingness, as compared with Visa, to allow the local mobile payments joint venture, Taiwan Mobile Payment Co., to offer its own tokenization for the bank credit cards that customers load into the HCE apps, perhaps under waiver.
UPDATE: Only six of the 14 banks are planning to launch this week with the rest launching soon. The 14 banks include many of Taiwan’s largest card issuers, including Cathay United Bank, Chinatrust, Taishin International Bank, Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank and Bank SinoPac. A total of 26 banks in Taiwan might launch before the end of the year.
