NFC Times Exclusive Insight – TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan’s second largest mobile operator, Taiwan Mobile, Tuesday launched support for credit and debit card payments on NFC SIM cards–but the telco is using an outside trusted service manager to manage its NFC SIM cards, not the TSM platform it set up with other Taiwanese telcos as part of a joint venture.
Taiwan Mobile also is not using the mobile-wallet app that its telco joint venture developed or even its own wallet app, which it has already released to the market. Instead, it is using an app from a separate joint venture made up of Taiwanese banks and banking groups.
Taiwan Mobile becomes the second major telco not to use the TSM platform from the telco joint venture. Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest operator, which launched NFC service early last year, also is not using the TSM platform of the telco joint venture, Alliance Digital Technology Co. Both Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile were co-founders of the telco JV in 2013.
