NFC TIMES Exclusive – As more U.S. merchants launch their own payments apps, some seem positioned to offer serious competition to Apple Pay and the other NFC “Pays” wallets.
Merchants and payments networks may eventually come to terms over interchange fees and access to consumer data, but in the meantime, a few large U.S merchants are giving NFC a pass and betting on their own mobile payments applications to keep payments–and customer data–under their own control. NFC Times discussed with Mark Horwedel, CEO of the Merchant Advisory Group, how U.S. retailers see the NFC-enabled wallets.
“I do think that eventually merchants certainly will want and seek out partners among financial institutions and partners among networks, but as long as the networks are trying to force their way in by forcing technology, by trying to control the data, by not negotiating fees, they're not going to get a warm welcome,” Mark Horwedel, CEO of the Merchant Advisory Group told NFC Times.
