NFC TIMES Exclusive – While the base of contactless point-of-sale terminals in the U.S. has grown substantially over the past two and a half years, some of the country’s largest merchants continue to resist the idea of accepting such NFC wallets as Apple Pay and Android Pay.
That includes the largest retailer in each of the following merchant categories: supermarkets, retail pharmacies, home improvement and big box general merchandise, the latter category led by Wal-Mart Stores.
Wal-Mart and some other merchants note that the fact that the major payments brands have extended their “honor all cards” rule to NFC wallets means that if they accept any NFC wallets, they have to accept them all. And they say they fear that their competitors could launch an NFC wallet to harvest valuable transaction data on their customers.
