NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Apple CEO Tim Cook, with typical enthusiasm, touted Apple Pay’s “phenomenal traction” yesterday in a conference call with analysts. But with one exception, he again failed to release any actual transaction figures for the mobile payments service, while also apparently overstating the contactless and NFC acceptance footprint in the U.S.
Cook, during Apple’s fiscal second-quarter earnings call, in a rare disclosure, did release figures for one market, Japan, but only for transit fare collection. He noted that half a million transit riders in Japan are tapping their NFC devices for an impressive 20 million Apple Pay transactions per month. Apple launched Apple Pay in Japan last October, its first and so far only market supporting closed-loop mobile fare collection in addition to retail payments.
Japan is one of 15 markets where Apple has launched its payments service, following the start of service in Taiwan and Ireland in March. The tech giant first rolled out Apple Pay in the U.S. two and a half years ago.
