Telefónica (O2) Germany has announced it will launch its NFC-enabled O2 Wallet in mid-February, beginning as a “friendly user test” on two Android smartphones that will enable users to tap to make purchases with the telco’s own payments service, mpass.
The move follows introduction of mpass passive stickers by Telefónica Germany, which the telco announced last fall. Both the stickers and forthcoming NFC mobile payment application–which Telefónica calls its “mpass O2 Wallet Card”–support MasterCard PayPass contactless technology. The NFC application will be stored on the telco's SIM cards.
Telefónica also announced Monday that next month it would enable customers to conduct peer-to-peer funds transfers from their mpass accounts on Android and Apple devices by entering their phone numbers.
