NFC Times Exclusive – Samsung has been considering introducing NFC transit ticketing in every market where it has launched Samsung Pay, including the U.S., and plans to support transit ticketing in China in a “matter of weeks,” the head of the mobile payments service told NFC Times.
Thomas Ko, vice president and global general manager for Samsung Pay, also disclosed the quiet launch of NFC transit ticketing from Samsung’s wallet in Singapore last month. But, overall, he said technical challenges and lack of standardization of the NFC transit ticketing infrastructure and ecosystem has caused delays and made launching the ticketing services on NFC phones more difficult.
The Chinese launch, which is planned for only two cities, Shanghai and Beijing, after delays, has been scaled back from an original four major cities that Samsung had hoped to start launching last summer, as NFC Times reported July 1.
