NFC Times Exclusive Insight – In an effort to deliver on the promise of a "true mobile wallet" and, of course, boost its flagging smartphone market share in China, Samsung has struck a deal with Alibaba affiliate Ant Financial Services to enable the Alipay QR code-based payments service in China through Samsung Pay.
A Samsung spokeswoman told NFC Times the deal could be the first of others, with the South Korean smartphone maker "always looking for ways to expand our partnership ecosystem for Samsung Pay with other key financial partners.” She did not elaborate.
Samsung said the deal would help it expand Samsung Pay in China. While the device maker said that its mobile payments service “has already seen tremendous success in terms of availability and adoption by consumers,” it declines to disclose any details to back that up. “We ultimately want to make Samsung Pay available to as many consumers as possible around the globe,” said the spokeswoman.
