NFC Times Exclusive – SHANGHAI, China: While Apple has signed up more banks and is believed to have more cards registered in China for its Apple Pay service–around 10 million, according to a source–Samsung is seeking to outflank its rival with more acceptance points and more applications for Samsung Pay, NFC Times has learned.
Both device makers have been talking to major Chinese transit operators to add fare collection to their respective wallets, sources told NFC Times. It’s unclear how much progress Apple has made, but Samsung intends to enable users to tap to ride with NFC in what is believed to be four major Chinese cities–Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen–by the end of the year, the first as early as this month, industry sources said.
UnionPay Not Happy
Samsung’s biggest coup so far has been its deal with Ant Financial Services, owner of China’s largest Internet payments service, Alipay, which has successfully expanded its service to physical stores using its mobile app and QR code technology. Ant Financial is affiliated with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group and its founder Jack Ma.
