NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Another major Chinese city is accepting QR code-based payments for transit fare collection, with riders of the Shenzhen Metro now able to use WeChat Pay to cover the fares.
The QR code-based payments is an alternative to contactless cards and NFC payments for Shenzhen Metro riders and follows similar moves by transit authorities and fare-collection companies in a growing number of other major Chinese cities over the past several months–all using either a QR code-based payments service WeChat Pay, Alipay or a service introduced by card network China UnionPay. Some use more than one of these services.
Among the transit authorities and fare-collection companies supporting QR code-based payments are those running two of the world’s largest transit services, in Shanghai and Beijing. Both have their own apps that can link to a QR- or other 2-D bar code-based payments service, such as Alipay or WeChat Pay.
