NFC Times Exclusive Insight – China’s two large mobile payments services, Alipay and WeChat Pay, continue to roll out acceptance in Europe, North America and other parts of Asia, as they follow Chinese tourists to these destinations.
They have been signing up partner banks and processors to enable merchants to accept their QR code-based payments services, with Germany-based Wirecard the latest to announce a deal with WeChat Pay’s owner, messaging giant Tencent. UPDATE: And U.S.-based Stripe is planning to enable Chinese users of both Alipay and WeChat Pay to buy from online merchants that Stripe serves. END UPDATE.
Tencent has been trailing Alipay in expansion overseas but is already reportedly in more than a dozen countries, including Italy and the UK.
