UPDATED: NFC Times Excusive Insight – Samsung Pay is expected to launch in Russia tomorrow, beating Apple to the market, which disclosed earlier this month that it plans a Russian launch of Apple Pay before the end of the year.
UPDATE: At launch, five Russian banks will support Samsung Pay at launch–Alfa-Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, VTB24, Russian Standard Bank and MTS Bank–but apparently only Mastercard-branded cards will be available for users to load into the Samsung Pay wallet.
Local media reports also mention Yandex.Money, an online payments company sometimes referred to as the Russian PayPal, as an expected participate in Samsung Pay. But a spokeswoman for the company declined to confirm that, when asked by NFC Times. “We are not giving any comments about mutual cooperation, but we welcome all the projects aimed at raising people's awareness of contactless technologies,” she said. Yandex.Money launched HCE-enabled payments from its own Android app in the spring. UPDATE: Samsung confirmed that Yandex.Money would also participate in the Samsung Pay launch. END UPDATE.
