NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Credible reports say that Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE plans to join the “OEM Pay” club, and that the company has signed an agreement with payments network China UnionPay to deploy an NFC-enabled mobile payments service in China.
That could not be confirmed with ZTE directly, which did not respond to requests for comment by NFC Times and has not yet announced the service on its Web site. Also, the reports do not give a launch date or name of participating banks, suggesting that any mobile payments service from ZTE has a long way to go. UPDATE: Other sources doing business in China have cast doubts on whether ZTE is really planning to offer its own wallet. END UPDATE.
UnionPay, China’s near monopoly bank card network has been partner for other smartphone OEMs launching mobile payments services in China, Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi.
