NFC Times Exclusive Insight – About 60% of Chinese consumers who have activated transit cards in their Xiaomi Mi Pay wallet phones in Shenzhen and Shanghai have topped up value on the cards at least twice–an indicator of use–Charles Dachs, NXP Semiconductors’ NFC chief, told NFC Times, noting that there are more rollouts of NFC transit ticketing to come in OEM Pay wallets in China.
Dachs also noted that the creation of “transit hub aggregators” has been essential to enabling more cities to offer NFC transit ticketing to their customers in China. As NFC Times reported last month, the emergence of “OEM Pay” wallets is driving increased interest in NFC transit ticketing as a separate application in China.
Besides Chinese OEMs Xiaomi and Huawei, which have introduced transit ticketing to their OEM Pay wallets, NFC Times has reported that Samsung is planning to introduce NFC transit through the Samsung Pay wallet in China by the end of the year, and Apple has talked to transit operators there, as well. Smaller OEMs Lenovo, Meizu and LeEco, the latter formerly known as LeTV, have either introduced NFC transit ticketing or plan to do so.
