Israel-based NFC vendor On Track Innovations has announced the deployment of its NFC-enabled Wave smartphone attachment in Taiwan, targeted for the iPhone, though only 10,000 units are being distributed, and Apple has not yet approved an iOS wallet app used with the devices for a planned mobile-payments service by Taiwanese banks, NFC Times has learned.
The Wave attachment, which fits in the audio jack of devices and comes with an embedded secure element, was ordered by the Taiwan Mobile Payment Co., a joint venture made up of three banking clearing houses. The joint venture, which also has major Taiwanese banks as investors, recently launched a service provider-TSM platform to provision applications on secure elements.
But Taiwan Mobile Payment is distributing 10,000 of the Wave attachments to 30 banks, meaning each bank will only be able to issue around 330 units to their customers.
