NFC TIMES Exclusive – A costly and time-consuming payments wearables certification process is a major contributor to delays in payments wearables getting into the hands of more consumers, Israel-based On Track Innovations’ director of marketing and head of innovations Nir Barr told NFC Times.
Barr mainly blamed the certification process for the lack of wearables hitting the market enabled by OTI’s wearables technology platform. But other sources say smaller wearables makers in particular are having trouble getting deals with issuers to put their cards onto the devices, and that this is even a bigger problem than delays in certification.
These are two of the reasons that there are still few wearables being used for payments by consumers beyond high-end smartwatches, such as Apple Watch and soon more Android smartwatches.
