NFC Times Exclusive Insight – France-based Gemalto, which has been heavily invested in trusted service management and NFC SIM cards in the past, is continuing to push cloud-based payments, announcing certification by MasterCard for its full host card emulation offer–with the help of technology from Moroccan-based payments software company HPS.
Although not essential, especially for early rollouts of HCE payments by banks, certification is a talking point for vendors seeking to gain a foothold for their solutions in the promising HCE market. Gemalto has yet to announce any HCE projects using its cloud-based payments offer. And no bank is believed to be using it yet commercially, though that could change soon, said a source, who declined to elaborate.
UPDATE: To be certified by MasterCard, vendors, such as Gemalto, would have to get testing from labs for functionality and security for their solutions, though this applies to the mobile payment apps only. The technology has to comply with MasterCard’s Cloud-Based Payments specifications, which the scheme released in July and August of 2014 and updated last summer.
