NFC Times Exclusive: While NXP Semiconductors won the coveted contract to supply NFC chips and secure elements to Apple for its new iPhone models, it has been cut out of the recent business for Samsung Galaxy handsets, including the Note 4.
Samsung Electronics’ mobile division is using a chip, the S3FNRN3, from the System LSI business unit in its semiconductor division, which began producing the NFC controller in volumes during the third quarter.
Samsung is also using an embedded 1MB secure element from Germany-based Infineon Technologies in certain models and for certain carriers or geographies. (See table on this page). That includes the Note 4 shipped to U.S. telco Sprint and offshoots of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5, the S5 mini and S5 Sport sold to Sprint and in one or more other markets, as well as the Galaxy S5 Active. But it does not appear that Samsung is widely deploying embedded chips in the new Galaxy handsets.
