NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Apple plans to support proprietary FeliCa technology as well as NFC in its iPhones sold in Japan like other handset makers in Japan have been doing since 2012, probably starting with the iPhone 7; but the tech giant won’t necessarily introduce Apple Pay with the device, a source told NFC Times.
He confirmed a story posted earlier today by Bloomberg reporting that Apple is planning to support proprietary FeliCa technology widely used for transit ticketing in Japan. But the story did not mention that the iPhone would also support hybrid technology, which is both standard NFC and FeliCa, the source told NFC Times. Such hybrid technology is already supported on more than 30 million handsets sold in Japan since 2012, including phones shipped by Apple’s chief rival, Samsung.
The standard NFC technology could enable Apple to one day support such applications as Visa payWave and Mastercard Contactless, which are used for credit and debit cards supporting Apple Pay in the nine markets where Apple has launched its payments service.
