If recently published patent applications are any indication, Apple wants to put its popular iPhone at the center of the retail-payment experience if it adopts Near Field Communication technology.
The company has filed at least eight patent applications that feature an NFC-enabled iPhone involved in payment or shopping in physical stores, all published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office April 1, though most only coming to light in the past few days.
The patents describe iPhones acting as POS terminals, conducting ATM transactions and carrying out peer-to-peer exchanges that enable iPhone users to transfer money by tapping their devices together or even by reading account details from contactless or conventional credit cards or checks.
