NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Despite providing the NFC technology for three “OEM Pays” that have launched in China or which are scheduled to do so, NXP Semiconductors CEO Richard Clemmer still says he sees transit fare collection as the main opportunity going forward for the chip maker’s NFC technology in China.
Clemmer, speaking last week to financial analysts, repeated earlier statements in which he says he sees the most important follow-up to the launch of Apple Pay in China not from other OEM Pays, such Huawei Pay or Mi Pay from Xiaomi, but in NFC transit ticketing.
When asked how he sees the NFC ecosystem evolving for Android following the Apple Pay launch in February, Clemmer said payment from Android phones would really be “driven by transit, as much as anything else.” He noted NXP’s announcement in February that it was supplying the NFC technology to Xiaomi for its new flagship smartphone, the Mi 5, with the technology targeted at transit ticketing. This technology includes embedded secure elements, which will store the applications.
