NFC Times Exclusive Insight – NXP Semiconductors chief Rick Clemmer said he believes the planned launch of Apple Pay in China will encourage Chinese OEMs to order the chip maker’s NFC technology, while major Chinese transit authorities are expressing more interest in using NFC-enabled phones for mobile ticketing, he said.
China so far has been a disappointment for NXP, the world’s largest NFC chip supplier, whose global NFC sales are believed to have dropped in the fourth quarter.
NXP does not release its NFC chip sales or shipments and with its acquisition of U.S.-based Freescale Semiconductor, which closed in early December, NXP is now combining Freescale’s general-purpose microcontroller business in its Secure Connected Devices business unit. That is the unit that takes in the chip maker’s NFC controllers and secure elements.
