NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Milan’s public transit operator, Azienda Trasporti Milanesi, or ATM, which began accepting contactless credit and debit cards on its four-line metro in 2018, has begun to expand the EMV payments service to buses. But the agency has much larger plans for the technology.
ATM Milan sees contactless EMV payments as “one of the bricks” in its budding mobility-as-a-service platform, which will enable customers to book and pay for such services as parking, bicycle rental and regional trains, in addition to the metro and buses, according to Roberto Andreoli, IT and ticketing systems director for ATM, speaking at a recent Transport Ticketing Digital conference. Moreover, he said bank cards will support not just pay-as-you-go but also subscriptions.
