NFC TIMES Exclusive – Two of the largest banks in Belgium have launched, or are planning to launch, HCE-based mobile payments but chose different approaches: BNP Paribas Fortis decided to first launch with Android Pay, while state-owned Belfius Bank plans to enable the service within its mobile-banking app.
Android Pay expanded to Belgium earlier this week, its 10th market overall and fourth in Europe, but has managed to gain participation of only one major bank, BNP Paribas Fortis, a subsidiary of France-based BNP Paribas. The bank also operates the two other subsidiaries supporting Android Pay at launch, Fintro and Hello Bank!
BNP Paribas Fortis has about a million active users banking on mobile, a spokeswoman told NFC Times. Roughly a quarter of those are potential users of Android Pay, but that number will increase to more than 750,000 by the end of June, when Android Pay will start supporting debit cards in Belgium. Android Pay is currently limited to credit card owners there. Google says it will add support for debit cards and yet another bank, CBC Banque & Assurance, a subsidiary of the French-based KBC Group.
