France’s much-anticipated NFC demonstration project scheduled to launch Friday in Nice will feature a variety of applications, including bank payment. But the premier service is expected to be transit ticketing.
Indeed, transit ticketing is the application that could drive a national rollout of NFC services in France, which mobile operators hope to launch in 2011.
In France, the infrastructure of readers onboard buses and trams and at metro gates is already in place in more than three dozen metropolitan areas across the country–most notably in Paris and the surrounding Ile-de-France region. The prospect for a fast takeoff for mobile payment in retail stores is much less promising, since contactless point-of-sale terminals are scarce in France.
