Telco O2 organized the event to enable fashion buyers a chance to give instant feedback to designers of the Emilio de la Morena collection. They tapped chips embedded in smart posters to indicate interest in a certain designs. A text message reportedly would automatically get sent to the designer or brand, giving them feedback on their latest creations.
The trial is one of several Telefónica O2 UK has held, with different applications, including the large O2 Wallet trial that launched in November 2007 enabling about 500 users to tap their phones to pay transit fares with the popular Oyster application. About half of the users could also pay for retail purchases with a Visa payWave contactless payment application. The trials are leading O2 to a commercial launch of NFC services, possibly in 2010.
