Only about 2,000 kilometers from the North Pole, Tromsø, site of the trial, is probably the farthest north any NFC phone has ever been tapped. The small number of trial users could tap their specially equipped NFC phones to pay for bus fares during the four-week trial.
Telenor’s Research & Innovation unit had to develop the transit application with Mifare DESFire, used on the Tromsø buses and a much more secure version of Mifare as is used on hundreds of millions of contactless transit cards in circulation in the world. But that created a problem because the secure element embedded in the Samsung NFC phone used for the trial could not support DESFire. Telenor got a license from NXP Semiconductors, owner of Mifare and maker of the NFC chip and secure element in the phone, for a special implementation of DESFire.
* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
