Telefónica (O2) Czech Republic will launch a mobile point-of-sale pilot in cooperation with MasterCard Worldwide, targeting small merchants in the country, with a device that supports MasterCard PayPass, along with contact EMV and mag-stripe transactions.
The project could be a test of the business case for telcos to develop mobile POS services and to recruit small merchants among their subscribers in partnership with acquiring banks.
Telefónica might expand the concept to other branch operators, such as those in neighboring Slovakia and to Germany. Telefónica O2 operators in the UK and Germany already have introduced or have piloted other mobile POS products, though these telcos appear to be mainly distributors of the mobile POS devices, none of which support NFC–unlike the one being introduced by Telefónica Czech Republic.
