Smart card companies Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient have each been working for years on products that can secure content, software and PIN codes directly on smartphones and other devices, but have little revenue to show for it.
Now the rival vendors along with UK-microprocessor design company ARM Holdings have decided to form a joint venture to try to encourage more chip makers, device manufacturers and service providers to adopt the security technology. They announced the plans today.
The card vendors believe fragmentation, including radically different models for the way they charge for their security software designed to run on smartphone processors, has put off the chip and device makers and especially service providers. They want the manufacturers and service providers to adopt the technology for smartphones, as well as tablets, smart-TVs, game consoles and car entertainment systems.
