NFC Times Exclusive – BARCELONA: PayPal will use host card emulation and the contactless acceptance network of Discover Financial Services to support NFC in the U.S. from the planned new version of its mobile app, NFC Times has learned.
PayPal announced Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that an upcoming version of its app would support NFC for the first time in the U.S., as well as in Australia. PayPal also formally announced its deal with mobile operator Vodafone to enable subscribers in major European markets to use their PayPal accounts to fund transactions they make in stores with the NFC-enabled Vodafone Wallet.
Vodafone had announced the move earlier this month, which as NFC Times has described will use a proxy card application supporting Visa contactless technology loaded onto Vodafone NFC SIM cards. The prepaid Visa application will conduct the transaction, with the PayPal account funding it on the backend.
