As a prelude to their planned introduction of mobile payment, mobile operator France Telecom-Orange UK and credit card issuer Barclaycard have launched a contactless credit card.
The Orange-branded dual-interface card, which carries a MasterCard PayPass application, enables consumers to make purchases of £10 (US$16.10) or less by tapping their card at the point of sale. Automated text-message alerts let users keep track of spending, make budgets and receive reminders about payment due.
The card follows the launch last August by rivals Telefónica O2 and bank NatWest of two prepaid cards that also offer mobile alerts, though the cards do not pack a contactless interface. O2 is also keen to launch NFC services, though the company is waiting for phones and larger chains to accept contactless payment in the UK.
