France Telecom-Orange and China Mobile, the largest mobile operators in their respective home markets, have signed a memo of understanding to work together to speed the commercialization of NFC SIM cards.
While the terms of the agreement announced Monday largely say the two telcos will follow international standards for SIM-based NFC–something they’ve both already committed to doing–they apparently see the agreement as building momentum for the technology globally.
Both mobile operators have signed on to support the NFC approach of global operator trade group, the GSMA, which is pushing SIM-based NFC. Mobile operators are facing possible threats from other mobile-commerce players, including Internet companies, that could use embedded secure elements in NFC phones or cloud-based technologies to roll out services and bypass operators.
