NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Shipments of NFC secure elements almost certainly fell in 2016, based on recent figures released by vendor association Eurosmart, though the group is again declining to release specific shipment figures for NFC cards and embedded chips, instead combining the NFC unit shipments with those for machine-to-machine modules.
Lower NFC SIM card shipments and likely lower chip shipments to Apple and Samsung for embedded secure elements are believed to have caused the fall in overall NFC secure element shipments last year. Embedded secure element sales to Chinese OEMs would not have made up the difference and shipments of NFC chips for other devices, such as wearables, were negligible.
Eurosmart said the combined shipments of NFC SIMs, embedded NFC secure elements and machine-to-machine, or M2M, modules increased by only 1% in 2016 to 500 million units from 495 million units in 2015.
