NFC Times Exclusive Insight – PARIS: Vendor trade group Eurosmart is projecting that NFC secure element shipments will grow by 20% in 2016 to 590 million, mainly fueled by increased shipments of embedded secure elements for NFC phones.
Eurosmart, whose members include the major card and chip makers globally, expects the growth rate of NFC secure elements–both embedded chips and NFC SIMs–to be higher this year, up by 40% from 2014 to 490 million units (see chart). But that still badly missed Eurosmart’s projection from a year ago of 600 million NFC secure elements for 2015.
That is a difference of 110 million secure elements, and Eurosmart blames the missed forecast on lower expected sales of NFC SIM cards. The closing of the Softcard joint venture in the U.S. is the main culprit for that fall in the projected SIM shipments, noted Eurosmart.
