NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Japan’s largest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, the world’s first major backer of contactless-mobile payments–using a forerunner to NFC technology–is planning to launch a separate QR code-based payments service this spring.
DoCoMo will reportedly enable the QR code-based service at nearly 20,000 stores and restaurants in Japan in April, a number projected to grow to 100,000 over the next year. Subscribers will fund the payments out of their monthly phone bills or from a credit card on file, say reports.
DoCoMo may be trying to compete with QR code-based payments from big Japanese web merchant and payments company Rakuten and popular messaging service LINE, say reports.
