Globe Telecom of the Philippines is planning to expand its GCash funds-transfer and bill-payment service to the physical point of sale, and has launched a project that puts a closed-loop GCash payment application onto microSD cards.
The project, which launched in October, enables users to tap to pay with the iPhone and some BlackBerry models at certain Starbucks outlets in the Philippines, and perhaps some other merchants.
Paolo Baltao, president of G-Xchange, the Globe subsidiary that operates GCash, told NFC Times in an e-mail that the telco would be “commercializing contactless payments” by early next year, after receiving the results of what he termed a pilot with the microSDs.
