NFC Times Exclusive – When Norway’s largest telco, Telenor, and its biggest bank, then called DnB NOR, announced plans to form an NFC joint venture in April of 2008, the future of NFC payments using SIM cards looked promising, but it was too early to launch service.
By the time Telenor and DNB finally did launch commercially with their Valyou wallet in late October of 2014, it was all but too late for SIM-based NFC. Interest was already growing in alternatives, such as host card emulation that could be launched directly from banking apps. And Apple Pay had begun its much-anticipated service in the U.S., with expectation that it would arrive one day in Europe.
