Quebec-based credit union Desjardins says that it expects gradual, or what it calls “progressive,” adoption of the SIM-based NFC mobile payments service, which it launched commercially this week, following an earlier soft launch.
The commercial launch of Desjardins Mobile Payment makes the application available to all Desjardins Visa credit and prepaid cardholders who are also customers of Canadian telcos Bell Mobility, Rogers Communications and Virgin Mobile, with Telus Mobility set to support the application in the future.
As NFC Times reported in July, Desjardins, though not one of Canada’s big five banks, soft launched with Bell in June and is the fifth major issuer to launch NFC payments in Canada. The country has a high penetration of contactless point-of-sale terminals, at more than 30%.
