NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Telco joint ventures on opposite sides of the globe announced within hours of each other plans to pull the plug on their respective NFC wallets, marking another big hit for the future of SIM-based NFC.
Canada’s Suretap Wallet joint venture announced July 14 that it would shutter its suretap wallet Aug. 26. Hours later, New Zealand’s Semble said it was putting a stop to users adding new cards to the Semble wallet, as of today, though users with existing cards will be able to use them until further notice.
Suretap and Semble both struggled with low consumer usage and growing competition from other wallets, most of which didn’t require users to swap their conventional SIM cards for NFC SIMs. This included banks launching NFC payments using host card emulation and, in the case of Canada, Apple Pay rolling out service that includes five major banks.
