NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Apple Pay launched Monday in Japan as Apple’s 12th market for its mobile payments service and the first to support closed-loop transit ticketing.
It’s also believed to be the first market to allow third-party vendors to play a significant role in provisioning and tokenizing the payment applications.
As expected, there are three major applications or brands Apple is supporting at launch, all using Sony's proprietary FeliCa technology: the Suica fare collection and retail payment application from JR East, the iD mobile credit card brand from NTT DoCoMo and the QUICPay mobile credit card brand from Japanese payments network JCB.
