NFC Times Exclusive – Turkey was among the first countries where NFC got a tryout commercially, led by the largest telco, Turkcell, which launched service in 2011 using, of course, its SIM cards as secure elements.
It looked promising back then for large rollouts of NFC in the competitive Turkish market, where other telcos were gearing up, too, and banks were also experimenting with NFC attachments, including add-ons for their iPhone-packing customers.
But the NFC rollout flopped and Turkcell effectively shut it down last year. Now, however, NFC is back, but without any telcos. Major banks have begun launching mobile payments apps on Android phones using host card emulation.
