Barclaycard tested both high- and low-value payment in the 12-month trial with its own and Visa Europe employees in this, its second NFC trial. It had tested low-value payment, £10 (US$15.10) and below, with more than 200 consumers, as part of the “O2 Wallet” trial led by telco Telefónica O2 and involving Transport for London that launched in 2007. In the second trial, trial participants entered a PIN code on their handsets for purchases above £10, though the number of merchants at which they could make high-value purchases was limited. They could also view transaction logs and check available funds and locate retailers that accept contactless. And they could tap the phone on smart posters to get additional information, reportedly from retailers.
Barclaycard used the trial to fine-tune its application for its planned launch of NFC mobile payment with Orange UK. The post-trial surveys and interviews have focused on customer experience, in particular how users took to high-value payment and entered a PIN on their handset keypads. Barclaycard and its parent, Barclays bank, are driving the rollout of contactless payment in the UK and could launch NFC commercially with Orange before the end of 2010.
