South Korea: KTF Takes Lead in GSM Association SIM-Payment Push
First Pay-Buy Mobile project sponsored by the GSM Association trade group. Users could tap their phones to pay at merchant locations accepting PayPass. Sponsors also staged transactions in Taiwan and U.S. to show interoperability.
South Korea’s No. 2 mobile operator agreed to take the lead in the series of payment projects promoted by the GSMA to showcase the SIM card as the preferred place to store payment applications. But the momentum was quickly lost following the trials because of the scarcity of phones supporting applications on the SIM and a standard single-wire protocol connection with the phone’s NFC chip. Contactless mobile payment and transit fare collection in Korea is currently done with proprietary technology and non-NFC phones.
