Russia: Telco and Oil Company to Launch Mobile Pay at the Pumps
Perm, Russia
Scope:
Rollout
Status:
Planned
Customers will be able to tap their phones to pay at the gasoline pumps in the Russian city of Perm. The amount will be debited via an electronic-cash feature on MTS SIM cards. The SIMs will be connected to flexible antennas that users can wrap around or place on top of their batteries. But for the "precommercial tests," MTS is also using an older NFC phone with an embedded chip, the Nokia 6131. Organizers plan to expand the service to full NFC phones, when available.
NFC Times Take:
MTS, Russia’s largest operator, has used the NFC bridge technology, SIMs and flexible antennas, in two other trials. Its main competitors, Vimplecom and MegaFon, are also gearing up to introduce NFC and mobile-contactless services.
* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
N/A: Not available or not applicable.
