Malaysia: Payment and Transit Featured In Small “Rollout” of NFC
Maxis billed its “FastTap” project as the first multiapp NFC project involving contactless credit. It’s also Visa’s first commercial launch for NFC, beyond the trial stage. Visa also launched its first contactless card project in Asia-Pacific in Malaysia and conducted an early NFC trial with Maxis and Maybank in 2006. Besides purchases and fare payment, users also can tap smart posters to download content.
While called a “commercial launch,” Maxis only put an initial 3,000 phones up for sale. Early reports were that the project was taking off slowly. An unexciting mid-tier Nokia phone isn’t helping spur interest. Also, the first phase of this project did not enable users to top-up the prepaid Touch ‘n Go value over the air. Still, Maxis and its partners took a relatively bold step in moving beyond the typical NFC trial stage, which usually entails handing out NFC phones for free.
