Poland will have more than 2 million Visa payWave cards on issue by the end of the year and more than 12,000 acceptance points, predicted Visa Europe in announcing the first NFC-payment project in the country.
Visa card issuer Bank Zachodni WBK, one of Poland’s largest banks, and Polkomtel, the country’s largest mobile operator, plan to launch the trial around June, after distributing the new Samsung S5230 NFC phone to about 500 mutual customers in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Poznan.
It is fitting that the bank, BZ WBK, is launching the country’s first NFC-payment pilot, since it was the first to launch Visa payWave cards in Poland, with its “<30,” or under 30, card, issued to students in late 2008. As of mid-May of this year, the bank had more than 180,000 dual-interface EMV cards in circulation, which cardholders can tap to pay for low-value purchases at about 3,500 merchant locations in the three cities. A representative of the mobile operator involved in the NFC project is calling it more than a trial.
