NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Google has not yet given up on technology it bought from the now defunct Softcard joint venture more than three years ago to try to boost use of its rebranded NFC mobile wallet, Google Pay, formerly Android Pay.
France-based point-of-sale terminal maker Ingenico announced this week it will support Google’s mobile-commerce technology, smart tap, which enables consumers to pay and collect or redeem offers or rewards in as little as one tap. It’s not the first POS terminal maker to announce support for Google’s smart tap in the past year. U.S.-based First Data-owned Clover said last May it would support smart tap.
But there appears to be little use of the technology to date. Google still only mentions two merchants in the U.S. supporting the technology on its U.S. mobile payments site, Walgreens retail pharmacies and The Coca-Cola Co. vending machines. Apple has been promoting a comparable mobile-commerce technology for Apple Pay, which it calls Apple VAS.
