NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – After being beaten by rival handset makers Huawei, Xiaomi and even Samsung to the launch of NFC transit ticketing in China, Apple today finally began enabling riders in two major cities, Beijing and Shanghai, to tap to pay fares using closed-loop transit ticketing cards.
But Apple has much more to worry about than just competing with Android handset makers enabling transit ticketing from embedded secure chips in their NFC phones, or the more than 160 Android models that support transit ticketing in Beijing using host card emulation with that city’s closed-loop Yikatong transit service.
Reports say that starting in May, Beijing will follow Shanghai and some other major Chinese cities in supporting QR codes for payment of fares at entrances to subway gates. It would likely support such QR code-based mobile payments services as Alipay. And there is already QR code-based fare collection on board buses in some districts of the Chinese capital.
