Three-month trial tested NFC mobile payment at retailers, fast-food restaurants, a sports venue and others that accept MasterCard’s PayPass application. It was one of the first multicity trials and also one of the few using a fingerprint biometric sensor on the handset to ease potential security fears among users.
Small, privately held telco Cell South and small, U.S.-based CDMA handset maker Kyocera, believed NFC could set them apart from larger competitors. For example, Cell South has also introduced network-based P2P payment with Obopay. The telco and handset maker were already talking about rollouts at the conclusion of the three-month trial. Those rollouts, as elsewhere in the NFC world, haven’t yet happened.
According to Cellular South, post-trial surveys showed 87% of trial participants said they were interested in using NFC for payment and more than 75% were “satisfied” with the “WirelessWallet” application, saying it was convenient and easy to use.
