This internal trial at BofA unit MBNA lasted until March 2007 and was one of the first to attempt over-the-air downloads of a payment application. That was not fully successful, but once on the phone, BofA employees could tap to pay with MasterCard PayPass.
This early OTA trial had problems, including an average 5-minute download time for the PayPass application, according to BofA. Also, Nokia’s first commercial NFC phone, the 3220, didn’t appeal to employees. Employees, who could choose between the phone and contactless key fobs, chose the latter by a high ratio, according to John Suchanec, formerly of the bank. BofA later held an NFC trial in Philadelphia.
